Interaction between the old and the new
Freising has a long tradition as a seat of learning, spanning the centuries from Bishop Otto of Freising and Pope Benedict XVI. There is also an uninterrupted history tying the world’s oldest brewery in Weihenstephan to the faculty of life sciences in Freising, which is instrumental in shaping our future. Another clear link connects the destruction of the Isar bridge in 1158, which led to Munich’s economic rise, and today’s modern airport. This interaction between the old and the new is also reflected in many sights in and around Freising, for instance in the Baroque cathedral and the contemporary art on display there.

The many-faceted old town center
The walk through the old town leads from Marienplatz, the heart of the town, to the Baroque Asamtheater and through the picturesque narrow streets up to the Domberg, the hill surmounted by the cathedral. At the cathedral we learn about Freising in its role as the city of the “prince bishops”, with its erudition and Old Bavarian piety. In the old town below we encounter many facets of laid-back lifestyles of the citizenry.
