Tasks and activities of the airport fire department
Support from Erding and Freising
The volunteer fire departments in the districts of Freising and Erding support the airport fire department. Depending on the extent of the damage, up to 160 firefighters on 32 vehicles are ready to help.
Fire protection activities of the airport fire department in Munich
The airport fire department works in the following areas:
- Terminal 1 (1010 meters long) Equipped with automatic fire extinguishing equipment, smoke and heat extractors, rolling fire doors and fire detectors. The elevators automatically go to a smoke-free level where emergency exits are located, and are deactivated if doors are open.
- Ramp Tower for Ramp 2 and Ramp 3 The ramp tower has an early warning system for smoke, supply lines for wet and dry extinguishing, a fire department elevator complying with the latest standards, and a pressurized safety stairwell.
- Baggage sorting hall between Ramp 2 and Ramp 3 Several sprinkler systems and water misting systems distribute the required water volume for a high-coverage sprinkler network and for the water supply positions for the wall hydrants. A rolling high-performance ventilator was specially purchased for this hall to support the natural smoke extraction of the baggage sorting hall.
- Tower (78 meters high) The tower is equipped with an early warning system, firefighters elevator, a safety stairwell and smoke extraction equipment. In addition, it is equipped with fire protection facilities as typically installed in highrise buildings and dry and wet risers.
- S-Bahn tunnel (1300 meters long) The tunnel extends under the airport ramp and the Central Area, and is equipped with smoke extraction equipment with gas cooling, wall hydrants and smoke protection doors along the tracks. Water supply positions are located between the tracks and the platforms. Voltage testers, grounding poles and wheeled bins for transporting firefighting equipment are located at the mouth and end of the tunnel. Fire department access points and emergency exits are situated at several locations.
- All aircraft maintenance hangars are equipped with several foam and water cannons that can be operated from a firefighting command post. This is absolutely essential because of the size of the hangars, the largest of which is 300 meters long, up to 100 meters deep and 28 meters high, with sufficient space to work on six Boeing 747 jumbo jets simultaneously.
- Freight terminal (520 meters long and 108 meters wide) Here sprinkler systems and smoke extractors provide a high level of protection. The high-level shelving warehouses also have sprinklers in the intermediate levels. The airport fire department always keeps the required equipment for hazardous materials and radioactive freight mission-ready in a special rolling container.
- Refuelling facility (total volume 28 000 t of kerosene) The facility is comprised of five elevated tanks. The pipeline transfer station, tank vehicles and tank vehicle pumping station are equipped with stationary foam and sprinkling systems and reservoir for extinguishing water.
- Extinguishing water supply In addition to the drinking water supply system, a separate extinguishing water network is in place with three underground basins, each holding 2000 cubic meters of water. The pumps deliver a combined volume of 60,000 liters per minute at a pressure of 7 bar.
- Standby fire crews These crews are provided at the request of airlines when refuelling aircraft with passengers on board and when work is performed that involves a fire hazard (e.g. welding). A safety crew is also onsite when events take place.
- Fire protection training is provided by the airport fire department on a continual basis for airport personnel, flight attendants and the companies operating at Munich Airport.
- Help to neighbouring fire departments is also provided by the airport fire department outside the airport property at the request of local fire departments.
