Training
The airport firefighter
Feuerwehrmänner bei Löscharbeiten
Professional qualifications are of major importance with the airport fire department, as reflected in the department’s training activities.

Hiring requirements
Feuerwehrmänner löschen brennendes Flugzeug
Maximum age: 35, Firefighter training completed with certificate and journeyman’s papers

Class 2 driving license or CE, appropriate health condition for the work, special medical check-up for fire department staff.

After the check-up, the applicants undergo a selection procedure encompassing theory, practice and athletic performance.

Training
Basic training generally takes place with a professional fire department in Bavaria. The training contents are based on the ordinance regulating civil service careers in firefighting services, on the ordinance on accreditation, training and examinations for firefighters, and the training syllabus for firefighting services. For general firefighting services, the Chamber of Trade and Industry examination for fire protection specialists is also recognized.

Training takes a total of two years, consisting of the six-month basic training period and special training for airport-specific concerns (e.g. aircraft and special buildings, tactical instruction for aircraft fire protection, operation and mastery of airport firefighting vehicles with a multi-phase approach to potential hazards, rescue of passengers and crew in case of aircraft accidents).

Specialized qualifications
Every firefighter is trained for a special area for which he is responsible in addition to regular incident and practice missions (including incident handling in the incident command center, maintenance of extinguishers / small equipment / breathing apparatus, vehicle training, carpentry shop or welding shop).
In addition, all firefighters must have detailed knowledge of extinguishing / sprinkler / smoke extraction /fire alarm facilities at the airport.

For management positions additional courses must be completed with a professional fire department or a state firefighting school.
For training in special areas, trainees are also sent on training courses at the state firefighting academies in Regensburg, Würzburg or Geretsried.

Professional qualifications
The department conducts theoretical and practical training (e.g. aircraft seminars, hazardous material and radiation protection training, paramedic training, safety procedures for heights, operation of extinguishing and smoke extraction equipment, fire department seminars, open-ground driving exercises, sports, etc.).
