Our start as a professional fire department
A little history...
Feuerwehrmänner 1949 auf dem Vorfeld
The Munich-Riem Airport fire department was officially recognized as a company fire department in 1949. Fire Station No. 1 was next to the tower. A horn and bell gave the alarm, and a field telephone announced the location and type of mission.

Finally, in 1966, the new fire station next to the aircraft hangars was ready for the fire department to move in.

1971/72 - Growth

The first major expansion in staff, fleet size and equipment came in 1971/72 in conjunction with the Olympic Games in Munich. Two large "Faun Magirus" firefighting vehicles and a "Mercedes Total" extinguishing vehicle carrying 6000 kg of powder were purchased for aircraft fire protection.

With the construction of the new Munich Airport, the specifications for a company fire department were redefined. The Freising District Administration Office issued the necessary certification on October 10, 1991. However, preparations for the expansion of the airport fire department and the move began much earlier.

On December 14, 1977 the Bavarian Office for Fire and Catastrophe Protection ordered the presence of a fire department on the construction site for the first time.

On October 1, 1987, the airport fire department hired 24 new employees who were immediately put through six months of basic training with the Munich fire department.

1988 - the move to Erding

On June 1, 1988 the “External Fire Watch of the Munich Airport Fire Department” officially took up its duties on the construction site of the new airport.

The unit's fleet of vehicles consisted of a TLF 16/25 tanker-extinguisher with auxiliary technical equipment and a supply vehicle. Serving as a back-up vehicle was an old ZB 6 tanker from the Munich-Riem fleet. The unit was housed in a temporary building set up near the main construction office.
