The road to a professional fire department
A little history...
1990 and after – deployment to the construction site
In January 1990 the new DLK 23-12 ladder rescue vehicle went into service. This required a move to the newly completed North Fire Station. The duty roster was increased to one crew leader and seven fireman.
All new employees have completed basic training with professional fire departments in Bavaria. Future managers completed courses to qualify as fire chiefs.
Every employee of the airport fire department – including the employees from Riem – served for several months on the construction site before the new airport went into operation to gain knowledge of their new operational sphere. In September 1991 the department moved from the northern to the southern fire station. Until the new airport went into service, the northern fire station was no longer permanently staffed.

New vehicles and intensive training
Between May 1991 and April 1992, 14 vehicles and 6 vehicle superstructures were purchased for the airport fire department. An intensive training program was implemented with these new vehicles and equipment.
The duty roster was increased to one crew leader and 10 firefighters in October 1991. This change was in response to the utilization of an aircraft maintenance hangar at the new airport for retrofitting work on Boeing 747 aircraft by Lufthansa and the resulting flight operations.

1992 – Airport fire department meets all requirements
In the spring of 1992, up to 18 fire department employees were on duty at the nearly completed airport. This crew strength was required due to a wide range of activities, such as test flight operations, visitors’ days, etc. On May 16, 1992, the day before the new airport went into operation, the airport fire department met the requirements in terms of size and equipment specified in its certification by the Freising District Administration Office as a company fire department.
Since the new airport opened: firefighters in service at two fire stations
On May 17, 1992 the crew strength in Munich-Riem was reduced to five firefighters. The criteria for providing a company fire department were no longer fulfilled there. Until June 30, 1992 the small crew remained in service around the clock in Munich-Riem with the formal status of a works fire department.
Starting on July 1, 1992, all employees of the airport fire department were in service at the two fire stations at the new Munich Airport.
