Frequently asked questions
Formalities and security at the airport
Durchsuchung eines Koffers bei der Sicherkeitskontrolle
In case of questions on travel documents, security screening or security fees, just one click will give you the answers.
  1. Who is responsible for security screening at the airport? The security checks at the airport are carried out by SGM.

This government contractor performs the security checks under the supervision of a Bavarian government agency, the Southern Bavaria Aviation Office.

  2. Why does Munich Airport collect a security fee? The security fee is not levied by the airport operating company. The airlines remit EUR 4.90 of the fee to the state. Munich Airport does not receive a share of the fee.

  3. I've forgotten my passport. What can I do? Every passenger must present proof of identity at the check-in desk. For this reason, the check-in staff always ask to see the passenger's passport.

For domestic flights within Germany, a driver's license or health insurance card is accepted in exceptional cases.

If you are flying to a foreign destination, please contact the Federal Police (Bundespolizei), which may be able to issue a substitute document in some cases.

  4. What do I need to bear in mind if I am planning to fly to the USA? To fly to the USA, passengers need a valid passport and must either have a visa or Green Card or be registered in the ESTA visa waiver program. Registration in the ESTA program is open to visa-exempt travelers, and must be carried out online prior to traveling.

In case of uncertainty, please contact the Federal Police (Bundespolizei) and the American Embassy.

  5. I have forgotten my overseas health insurance documents. What should I do? No problem: If you have health insurance with the AOK (German public health insurance plan), just present your AOK card at the Service Center in the Munich Airport Center. The staff will provide you with the documents you need.

  6. I've lost my ticket. What can I do? Most airline tickets are booked and paid for online. In this case, you can print out a new booking confirmation anytime or ask the check-in staff to print out a new boarding card.

If you have a paper ticket, please contact your airline or the check-in staff. The procedures may vary among airlines.

  7. What is the procedure at the security checkpoint? Since November 6, 2006, it has been mandatory at security screening checkpoints for passengers to take off their jackets, take out laptops and show any liquids they are carrying.

This process is mandatory for all EU airports without exception.
