Modern, minimally invasive surgical techniques that leave organs intact
For many years, numerous gynecological conditions that require surgical treatment involved the loss of the affected organ – an event that has a serious impact on the patient, both physically and psychologically. A gentler alternative to “radical surgery” is minimally invasive surgery, which enables the surgeon to operate without removing organs while achieving optimal therapeutic and cosmetic results.
Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) techniques for the treatment of gynecological conditions are among the key specializations of Dr. Thomas Füger, who performs surgery as the head of the gynecological department of AirportClinic M. This fills an important therapeutic need, because so far very few gynecological surgeons are performing these procedures, which, although very sophisticated, are very gentle and safe methods for such treatments as the surgical removal of large myomas or hysterectomies.

Minimally invasive
The principal advantage of MIS techniques is the fact that effects on tissue are minimized: Unlike such procedures as a conventional abdominal incision, minimally invasive surgery requires only small cuts through the skin. As a result, the healing process is faster and the convalescent phase shorter. For example, patients who have myomas removed at AirportClinic M often leave the very next day and resume normal activity within a week. If a hysterectomy is necessary, it can be performed by means of a laparoscopy with tiny incisions in the abdominal wall, in many cases leaving the cervix intact, which significantly reduces the risks and long-term effects of the procedure.
Endometriosis, sterility, bleeding disorders and breast cancer
Other key specializations include the surgical treatment of endometriosis and sterility as well as persistent bleeding disorders. In such cases, the gold mesh technique is used. In the USA, this is a routine, well-established treatment for patients who do not intend to have more children. The patient can leave AirportClinic M within three or four hours of the procedure.
The development of modern, minimally invasive surgical techniques has also done much to make breast cancer treatment a less frightening prospect. With few exceptions, surgical treatment no longer involves a mastectomy, and in many cases the radical removal of the axillary lymph nodes can now be avoided through the targeted removal of the sentinal lymph node.

Qualifications
Dr. Füger has received the MIC III qualification from the Gynecological Endoscopy Working Group of the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics. This is the highest training and specialization level in the field of minimally invasive surgical techniques. So far only 37 of these certificates have been granted in Germany.
