Surgical treatment of bladder cancer through urinary tract
With 16,000 new cases each year, bladder cancer is the second-most common urological malignancy in Germany.
Treatments
The possible treatments for a patient depend mainly on the stage of the illness, the degree of malignancy and the patient’s general health. Although tumors that have penetrated the muscle layer of the bladder often necessitate the total or partial removal of the bladder, it is usually possible in the case of surface tumors to avoid this step and remove the tumor endoscopically.
The method of choice is the transurethral resection, in which the tumor is removed endoscopically, so that no surgical incision is needed. In this procedure, an instrument is pushed through the urinary tract with a wire loop to separate the cancerous tissue from healthy tissue using an electrical current to form a plasma corona. In some cases it is also possible to remove the tumour using a laser. At AirportClinic M, this procedure is used in case of benign enlargements of the prostate as well as bladder tumors.
