Early diagnosis of prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting men, and the risk increases with age. Each year there are approximately 45,000 new cases of prostate cancer in Germany alone.
Regular Check-ups important
For that reason, men should have an annual check for prostate cancer as of the age of 45. Men whose father or brothers have been diagnosed with this illness should begin having these check-ups at the age of 40. With early diagnosis and surgical treatment, the probability of curing prostate cancer is a very good 90 percent. In detail, prostate cancer screening involves the following tests: a digital rectal examination (DRE), blood tests for total PSA and, if necessary, free PSA and – if a need is indicated – a special ultrasound test. All of these methods involve little time and can be performed on an outpatient basis with no physical effects on the patient.
