Situated in the Bavarian Alps, Oberammergau is a popular tourist resort. The Passion Play has made Oberammergau famous throughout the world. Today this unique town also stages top-class operas in the Passion Play House every summer.

Pilatushaus
Houses lavishly painted with fresco pictures are to be found throughout Oberammergau. This particular technique was given the name "Lüftlmalerei" by Franz Seraph Zwinck in the middle of the 18th century. The finest example is the Pilatus House, which in a strange way gives the viewer the illusion of what appears to be architecture on the façade of the house.
60 active woodcarvers
Herrgott in Holzschnitzkunst
There are still 60 active woodcarvers in Oberammergau today. Visitors to the Oberammergau Museum will be given a comprehensive and entertaining impression of the history of woodcarving. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the famous church crib, created by Oberammergau carvers over a period of more than one hundred years. In 1860 the wedding at Canaan with some 200 figures was added, and the fairy-tale king, Ludwig II, insisted on paying a visit to Oberammergau because of this work of art.
"Worlds behind Glass" – a great success

In November 2006 the verre églomisé (glass painted on the back) exhibition "Worlds behind Glass" of the Oberammergau Museum was opened in the Pilatus House. It has been a great hit, and the museum's director Constanze Werner can be very pleased about the constantly rising numbers of visitors. The collection is one of the largest in Europe and comprises a number of pictures from the Staffelsee region. Wassily Kandinsky and other artists from the artists' group the "Blauer Reiter" (Blue Rider) were so fascinated by the exhibits that they themselves started to paint on the back of glass.

"Discovering Oberammergau" can be booked from Friday to Sunday and includes not only two overnight stays with breakfast but also a guided tour of the village, a round trip up to the Laber mountain by cable car and a traditional Bavarian dinner, free admission to the Oberammergau Museum and the Living Work studio in the Pilates Hause.
