Prien and the region surrounding Lake Chiemsee and the Alps in the south of Germany is uniquely beautiful. Covering some 80 square kilometres, Lake Chiemsee is the largest of all the lakes in Bavaria.

Chiemgau’s most famous attraction – the Herrenchiemsee Palace - is located on the Herren island. The palace was built by King Ludwig II. of Bavaria between 1878 and 1885 in the style of the palace at Versailles. It was however left unfinished. The surrounding parklands contain both gardens and fountains.
Chiemsee Fraueninsel is an absolute little gem of peace and tranquillity free from irksome noise of traffic. Visitors come to the Fraueninsel for its culture and the nature. The convent which was founded in the 8th century is still occupied by Benedictine nuns today. Chiemsee Schifffahrt runs boat trips to the islands all year round from Prien.

King Ludwig II is probably Bavaria's most famous son. Some 125 years on, his mysterious death is still capturing the imagination of young and old. To mark this anniversary, the Bavarian State Exhibition 2011 "Twilight of the Gods - King Ludwig II and his era" at Castle Herrenchiemsee is giving visitors a fresh perspective on Ludwig, the man and monarch.
The multimedia exhibition concept combined with high quality exhibits and unique scenographic spaces allows visitors a contemporary insight into one of the most enigmatic figures in Bavarian history. The exhibition runs from 14 May to 16 October 2011. As part of the event, the uncompleted rooms in Castle Herrenchiemsee, which had been off limits to the public up to now, will open their doors for the first time.

A concept which is superbly put into practice all around Lake Chiemsee is that of presenting music in such a way as to make it enticing to all the senses: the fantastic natural stages in the vicinity together with the facilities in the many palaces, castles and monasteries. At Lake Chiemsee traditions and customs are so very much alive and in evidence that guests to the area are also able to experience and enjoy them at such events as the legendary summer party on the Herreninsel or on the Fraueninsel or at a private “Hoagart” – a folk music evening with friends.

Wandern und Biken
Spring and autumn when things are somewhat quieter around the “Sea of Bavaria” are the best times to explore the region around Lake Chiemsee in a more active manner. The popular lakeside trail is some 60 km in total almost all of which is flat and easily walkable.
The Chiemsee Golfcard gives golfing fans the “green-light” they need. Pay for three sessions and play four, and all for just 160-- Euro. Nestling against the impressive backdrop of the Chiemgau Alps are no fewer than seven golf courses – a golfer’s dream!
