The "Schrannenhalle" – A new, old piece of Munich

In autumn 2011, exactly 160 years after the first start of construction, the Schrannenhalle opened its doors again – with a new, but originally concept: A market hall as an enlargement of Munich's daily food market.
History - At the beginning there was a tidy-minded King
Schranne: Messestand 1905
Maximilian II, was troubled by the screaming of the farmers and corn traders at the open space in front of the city hall – the corn market had to move. Engineer Franz Karl Muffat created a spectacular building for the corn traders at Munich´s Viktualienmarkt. The 430-meter-long hall was finished in 1853, after only two years of construction. With its wrought iron and glass, it was a technical wonder and an avant-garde piece of modern architecture during this epoch.
The Schrannenhalle as a corn trading market only existed about 20 years, because the Grossmarkthalle, a hall situated conveniently at Munich´s train station, took over the grain trading in the city. In 1914, half of the Schrannenhalle had been disassembled and 18 years later the rest got destroyed due to a fire.
Discovered and restored

Parts of the old Schrannenhalle where discovered accidentally by the architect and city historian Volker Hütsche in 1978. 25 years later the hall reopened its doors with the restaurant "Der Pschorr". But the concept failed.
New, old concept

On October 13, the Schrannenhalle opened again, in its original form as – a trading hall. The "Schranne" offers a wide range of culinary treats: from pastries to vegetables and fruits, meat, fish, cheese. Visitors can also buy homemade pasta, flowers as well as living- and kitchen accessories.

A real first class food court and 30 market stalls invite their guests to shop and try a wide range of regional and international specialties. The unified wooden style of the stands create an open and inviting character to the “Schranne”. To highlight the character of a market hall there are eight folding doors which can be opened completely. There are also two new galleries at the end of the hall, which give a great few – those are use by the "MarktKüche" from the famous restaurant Käfer and the "Steirer Laden" with culinary delicacies from Styria. The new "Schranne" combines a modern market concept with traditional atmosphere and is really worth a visit.
