Brewery

The Brewmaster

René Jacobsen grew up in northern Germany but moved to Bavaria after finishing school to master the art of brewing. He earned his diploma as a brewmaster at TU Berlin and has been responsible for our airport brewery since 2013.

The friendly two-meter-tall brewmaster, known for his calm North German demeanor, crafts Airbräu beers according to his own vision and enjoys developing new recipes.

For René, the unique blend of a traditional Bavarian tavern and an international airport makes his job especially exciting.

Our Seasonal Beers

The year kicks off with Starkbierzeit (strong beer season), when our strong Aviator is tapped. As beer garden season begins, the dark "Mayday" wheat beer is poured at the Maifest (May Festival). The start of Bavaria’s "fifth season" (Bavaria’s grand folk festivals season)  is marked by our popular festival beer, Gaudium, best enjoyed in a traditional stone mug. Finally, rounding off the year is our dark winter beer, Krampus—the perfect companion for the cold season.

  • Aviator
Aviator – a hearty doppelbock beer: The beer calendar starts off with Aviator, a dark double bock that is always on tap at Airbräu between Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. With its rich flavor and deep color, this strong brew is best enjoyed with care.
  • Mayday – a malty wheat bear: The first barrel of Mayday is tapped on May 1st. A dark wheat beer that carries all the typical characteristics of top-fermented brews but with a richer malt aroma, thanks to its traditional brewing with dark barley malt.
  • Gaudium – for the Bavarian festival season: Just in time for the kickoff of Bavaria’s grand folk festivals, our Festbier is tapped. Traditionally served in Maßkrügen (liter mugs), this smooth and full-bodied beer is a highlight of Bavaria’s "fifth season."
  • Krampus – the dark winter beer: As the final seasonal specialty, Krampus rounds off Airbräu’s brewing year. Dark in color, full-bodied, and rich in flavor, it’s the perfect companion for the cold winter season.

Mountain Hub Distillers

During the COVID lockdown, the Airbräu brewery had to save its beer. At the time, 4,000 liters of Fliegerquell Helles and 1,300 liters of Aviator strong beer were stored in the tanks.

This extraordinary rescue mission led to the creation of three unique beer brandies, each capturing the story of this turbulent time.

Try our beer brandies at Airbräu, in the Mountain Hub restaurants, or at the bar of the Hilton Munich Airport. These limited editions are also available in bottles—perfect as a souvenir or a special gift from Bavaria.

INFUSED

4,000 liters of Fliegerquell Helles made their way to Huber Fine Fruit Distillery in Langenpreising, where it was traditionally distilled and refined with select botanicals. With a touch of creativity and a focus on sustainability, a unique beer brandy was crafted in the style of gin.

In 2022, this beer brandy won a silver medal at Meininger’s International Spirits Award in the ‘Spirits from Beer’ category

OAKED

800 liters of Aviator were distilled in Schwangau and aged in a French oak cask previously used for Bourbon. The cask rested for 28 months at 1,700 meters on Tegelberg, overlooking Neuschwanstein Castle. The harsh mountain climate created a distinctive, intense beer spirit with a unique flavor. Due to the high angel’s share on Tegelberg, the aging process enhanced its bold and aromatic character.

In 2024, our Oaked Bierbrand was awarded a gold medal by Meininger's International Spirits Award in the "Spirits from Beer" category. Additionally, in 2025, it received a silver medal at the Craft Spirits Berlin Awards.

PURE
