Guidelines for travel and hand luggage

Unsure if you are allowed to pack a certain item in your hand luggage or suitcase? Here you get an overview:

Hand luggage

In your hand luggage, place only the items that you require or wish to have with you during the flight. The less hand luggage you carry, the more smoothly you will get through security screenings. Present your liquids separately from other hand luggage for screening at security.

Liquids and powder

You can carry liquids only in containers with a volume not exceeding 100 ml in a transparent, resealable bag no larger than 1 liter. Each passenger ist allowed to carry one bag.

Exceptionally, security may open bottles or containers for screening. Solely for security reasons, liquids may not be permitted.

Medication, special foods

You can also carry medication and foods for special dietary requirements in containers larger than 100 ml

Duty-free items

In general, duty-free purchases of liquids, creams, etc. from any airport or aircraft can be carried in your hand luggage.

However, these items must be carried with proof of purchase in an undamaged, resealable security bag and checked using a special device. This device is also used to inspect liquid medications and foods for special dietary needs.

Regulations for travel to the USA

The US Transportation Safety Authority (TSA) has made changes to security regulations for flights to the USA. The new rules take effect on June 30, 2018. The list of items banned in hand luggage will now include powders and powder-like substances in containers larger than 350ml.

Powders or powder-like substances in containers with a volume of less than 350ml may also be banned from hand luggage if the substance cannot be clearly identified as non-suspicious. For further details, please contact the TSA or national authorities.

We advise all passengers travelling to destinations in the USA either to refrain from carrying powders or powder-like substances, or to pack them in check-in luggage.

Bulky luggage

You can hand over surfboards, bicycles, etc. at special check-in desks for bulky luggage. Contact your airline in advance if you plan to carry bulky luggage. Information on bulky luggage, luggage allowances and excess baggage fees is available from your airline.

Strollers/prams/pushchairs

In Terminal 2 you can take your own buggy or stroller with you as far as the aircraft door.

In Terminal 1, you are asked to drop off your stroller at the bulky luggage counter. If you are travelling with a buggy, you can hand it over at the check-in desk like a regular baggage item.

Our suggestion: Immediately after the Terminal 1 security checkpoint, you can borrow a buggy free of charge.
